Miles and Hope

The passion that drives us

Our greatest win is never the many physical miles we cover on our bikes, or the excruciating terrains we conquer in our tours, it's always the distance we cover inside of our hearts to awaken the hope within and share it with another.

We cycle to educate orphans and vulnerable children.

Making a difference

Despite such Government led initiatives like the free primary education Kenya, it was estimated that at least 1.5 Million kids are still out of school amid concerns regarding the quality of learning for those already enrolled. Only about 28% of children aged 3 - 5 years have access to early childhood development education! (National plan of action for Orphans and Vulnerable Children 2010).

This picture is simply unacceptable. We must be moved not so much to a finger pointing game but an action posture that says, I will step out and make a positive difference; however small. We must find it in our hearts to say that the extra mile that will create a new future begins with me. The Miles and Hope initiative is a fair attempt towards the writing of a new story of hope.

Our key objectives:

  • To mobilize funds through cycling to educate orphaned and vulnerable children in Africa
  • To provide mentorship and inspiration to orphaned and vulnerable children and young leaders in Africa
  • To create a community of cycling enthusiasts growing in key leadership competencies through experiential adventures
  • To advocate for safe riding and sound environmental stewardship in Africa

Impact

The Miles and Hope Initiative has managed to sponsor five (5) children in Jabali Christian Schools in Nairobi and Life Frontier School in Garrissa through primary education.

A cycling club dubbed Extramilers formed soon after the initiation of Miles and Hope has continued to grow and exert positive influence in the cycling community as a result of growing structural muscle that is key in organizing successful bikeathon events.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

Our cycling journey - Miles and Hope

Our Journey of Twelve Thousand (12,000) Miles

Our conviction is that we are here to go the distance not just for ourselves but for another. We don't have to be bogged down by a past that is out of our control because we can co-create a future full of contagious hope.

Miles and Hope Impact
Why we cycle - Miles and Hope

There is a great terrain ahead that demands to be covered and our desire is to support at least 10 children in each of the 47 counties in Kenya in the next 5 years and build a robust mentorship program that optimizes Miles and Hope Scholars' potential.

We realize we cannot need to cover the distance together and help bridge the hope deficit that is so rampant in our country. Every Child covered under this initiative is a potential community that is transformed for the better.

Miles and Hope is about taking an extra mile to bring hope to a vulnerable child. There is a mile for everyone to take. The main event involves an annual cycling challenge that covers at least 12,000 cumulative miles done every end of November by over 40 participants with a goal of raising kes.500 for every mile covered.

The Extramilers Cycling Club was started in 2013 by Young Professionals in International Christian Centre (ICC), having completed 3 succesful cycling events.

We seek to mobilize cyclists, individuals and organizations or corporates to ‘take an extra mile’ that raises funds to bring hope to orphaned and vulnerable children.

The club has over 50 cyclists who train approximately 3 to 6 hours every weekend in preparation for the annual charity tour, Miles and Hope.

Weekly training rides

We cycle every Saturday as part of training in preparation for our annual event dubbed Miles and Hope.

Weekly routes are carefully plotted beforehand where cycling distances ranging between 30km and 140km. We usually start at 7:00am from International Christian Centre Nairobi West (ICC Nairobi) or sometimes International Christian Centre Imara Daima (ICC Imara). We have experienced cycling marshals who provide the necessary oversite and assitance during the rides.

A light snack is guaranteed at the finish point where the cyclists also get to enjoy an extended social time. Community is important to us!

Plan to attend one of our rides and see if you like it. We share information about upcoming weekend rides on our Facebook and Instagram pages. We also operate a mailing list and WhatsApp group for members, where you will be able to keep in touch with other members and receive updates about club activities.

What will it cost?

All our members contribute to the club in one of the following ways:

  • Annually @ ksh.5,000/-
  • Monthly @ ksh.500/-

The collections go towards light snacks after the rides, scouting routes, provision of first aid equipment, marshals enroute and organising club events and apparel. Our accounts are transparent and available for all members.
